If you can´t afford an apartment, here are less costly options.
The most inexpensive form of accommodations is usually a chambre de bonne or chambre de service (maid´s room). This is usually a converted maid´s room on the top floor of a bourgeois apartment building. It often has a separate entrance from that of the landlord (very often a 6th or 7th floor walk-up) via a service entrance.
It is usually a small room with mansard ceiling for one person with a sink and a hot plate. Many independent rooms do not have private showers or full kitchens, but shared shower and bathroom facilities are usually available in the hallway. Some landlords offer the use of the shower in their apartment. This doesn´t sound too glamorous but it can have its charm for a while. With simple accommodations you can focus more time and money on Paris itself. The view can be memorable.
You can also rent a room in an apartment with a French family or, more often, an individual propriétaire. This housing arrangement usually consists of a private room with limited access to the kitchen, telephone and bathroom facilities. Each situation offers varying degrees of privacy. Some landlords have more than one room to rent in their apartments, making it possible for two students to live together. Others have large rooms that can be shared by two people. There are varying degrees of comfort (private or shared bathroom, television, personal phone) and the price fluctuates accordingly. Landladies and couples are usually interested in some cultural exchange, which can help enable the student ease his/her way into daily French life. This is an arrangement that can often be made through your particular university housing offices.
This lovely campus complex has rooms available at very reasonable rates in 30 different maisons (houses) for university students (under 30) studying in Paris. If you are an architecture buff, you might want to investigate the two maisons designed by Le Corbusier: the Swiss Foundation and the Franco-Brazilian Foundation.
Make sure to call or write far in advance of your arrival date if you are considering this option. Rooms go fast, and can only be booked for a year-long period. A single room goes for 90 FF per day, and 1200 FF per month; monthly double room rates are 1500 FF, depending on the maison. This could also be a good alternative to a hotel while you are looking for other accommodations-rooms are available to anyone with an International Student Identity Card at 80-100 FF per night during the summer and in September before the beginning of the school year. Accommodations are usually provided in the maison of the country from which the student originates; some houses prefer graduate students only. Being au pair (baby-sitting, housework, English lessons, mother´s helper chores, or any combination thereof in exchange for room and board and a small salary) is another popular option.
