Literally "spice shops," these are simply grocery stores that sell a little bit of everything. In most quartiers there are independent grocers as well as one or several chains, the old standby being Felix Potin, an institution in Parisian grocery shopping. In recent years, Codec, which has numerous large supermarkets, has taken over many épiceries. The ones owned and operated by North Africans usually stay open late-often until midnight in some of the outlying neighborhoods. This is convenient for finding munchies and beverages late at night.
